Michael "Mike" A. Smith

Michael “Mike” Allison Smith, 76, of Huntington, passed away at 5:50 pm Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. Mike was born on May 15, 1946, in Huntington, IN, the son of Robert C. Smith and Ruth B. (Allison) Smith. He graduated from Huntington High School with the class of 1964. He proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. He then worked for the Erie Railroad for 17 years. In the early 90’s he joined the National Guard for a few years before retiring in 2008 from Majestic of Huntington, IN after 15 years. He married the love of his life Debbie K. Bear on May 15, 1999, in Huntington, IN. Mike was a member of the American Legion Post #7 of Huntington, IN; 40 & 8 of Huntington, County, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #2689 of Huntington, IN. He was a past Commander for the V.F.W. from 2011 to 2013 and held other leadership roles. He was a proud member of the Honor Guard for Veteran’s funerals for over 10 years and was the Secretary for the Veterans Service Council for many years. Mike was passionate about serving his country and those who served before and after him. He was a Chicago Bears Football fan, an avid reader of the newspaper, and read all of James Patterson’s novels. His love and devotion was endless to his grandchildren that called him Pappy. He enjoyed taking his wife out on lunch dates and visiting with whomever he ran into. Anyone that knew Mike knew how he loved to tell stories and jokes. If you seen Mike out at one of the clubs, he would ask to join him for an adult beverage. Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Debbie K. Smith of Huntington, IN; daughter, Kristi (Stephen) Hammett of Huntington, IN; sister, Ruth "Ellen" (Dave) Spencer of Huntington, IN; brother, Kenneth W. Smith of Huntington, IN; two grandsons, Dallas (Jessica) Hammett of Huntington, IN, Logan Hammett of Huntington, IN; two granddaughters, Cadence (Noah) Smith of Huntington, IN, Meghan Hammett of Huntington, IN; and two unborn great-grandchildren, Skylar and baby Hammett. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert C. Smith, mother, Ruth B. Smith, sister, Sharon A. Smith brothers, Donald R. Smith, and Willard "Bill" Smith. Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, IN. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Bailey-Love Mortuary with Rev. Dianna Teusch officiating. Military Honors will be rendered by the VFW Post 2689 Honor Guard.
