John A. Hacker

John A. Hacker, age 90, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Heritage of Huntington. Mr. Hacker was a lifelong farmer in Lancaster Township, where he and his wife of 58 years, M. Louise Hacker, received the Hoosier Homestead award in 1998. This award recognizes farms that have been in the family for over 100 years or more. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1944. He served in the Korean War with the United States Army from 1952-1954. As an active member of his community, Mr. Hacker served 27 years (1969-1996) on the local United REMC Board of Directors, 25 of which he also served on the Indiana Electric Cooperatives Board and 12 of which he served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Board. As a member of St. Peter’s First Community Church, he served as Council President, Deacon, and Elder. In Lancaster Township, he served on both the Township Advisory Board and the Lancaster Cemetery Board. He was born September 18, 1926 in Huntington County to Roy E. and Eva (Potts) Hacker. He married Margaret Louise Paul on September 18, 1948 at Salamonie Church of the Brethren. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2007. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Baker, and a son, Michael (Sandra) Hacker, all of Huntington; a sister, Kay (John) Jessup of Fairmount, another sister, Carolyn Fortress of Fort Wayne, and a brother, Jay (Marilyn) Hacker of Fishers. Grandchildren include Sarah (Brian) Shuter of Frankton, Jennifer (Marc) Hollingsworth of Lebanon, Cassandra Hacker and Walter Hacker, both of Huntington, and four great grandchildren. Calling will be Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at St. Peter’s First Community Church, 206 Etna Avenue, Huntington, with Pastor Richard Strick officiating. Calling will be available at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery in Huntington County with military graveside rites performed by VFW Post #2689 of Huntington.
