J. Douglas Poe

J. Douglas Poe, 92, of Huntington passed away Monday, February 24, 2025. He was born August 9, 1932 in Huntington, Indiana, to his parents Lewis and Mary L. Poe. He married the late Annabelle G. Swain on February 14, 1951. Doug was a graduate of Huntington High School in 1950 and worked with his father and brother Gene in the burial vault business. Their company, Stuver Cement, was located on William Street Extended in Huntington, Indiana. In 1958, he became a Huntington City Fire Fighter and worked there until his retirement in 1988. He also worked at Norwood Construction Company on his days away from the fire station helping build the Norwood Golf Course. Doug and his wife, Annabelle, also worked at Community State Bank to supplement their income to pay the college bills for their sons. Edward, a graduate of Ball State University taught high school for 40 years. Jay, a graduate of Purdue University, worked as the Huntington County Surveyor for over 32 years until retiring in 2024. Both Doug and Annabelle had a great sense of pride in being able to pay for their son’s college education. Doug was a man of many interests and had hobbies of coin collecting, hunting, fishing, and attending public auctions. He also ran a hardware business and collected various crocks, glassware, antique furniture and pocket knives. In addition, both Doug and Annabelle were members of the Amity Lodge in Huntington. Doug was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite. He and Annabelle were members of the Order of Eastern Star, Huntington Chapter, and worked at various fund raising dinners and projects for the lodge. He was a member of the Topnotcher’s Sunday School class at the Central Christian Church in Huntington. Doug lived a long and fulfilling life. He and Annabelle worked many jobs in their lives to be able to enjoy luxuries such as a summer cottage on Lake Webster, golf club memberships, trips to Branson, Missouri, travel to national golf championships, and family trips to Lookout Mountain, the Wisconsin Dells, Disney world in Orlando, Kelloggs of Battle Creek, the Mackinac Bridge and trips to Chicago and the Kentucky Derby. We celebrate that the two of them had a long and spirited life with their friends and family. Doug is survived by his two sons, Edward L. Poe of Indianapolis, and Jay D. Poe of Huntington. He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Gene A. Poe and Greg A. Poe. Greg Poe’s son, Scott, and grandson Logan Poe also survive. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Monday, March 3, 2025 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, IN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, March 3, 2025 at Bailey-Love Mortuary with Pastor Jason Fields officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.
