Virgil R. Scher

Virgil R. Scher, age 91, of Huntington, died at 2:32 p.m. Thursday (January 7, 2016) at Parkview Huntington Hospital. Visitation will be from 1 - 2 p.m. Monday (January 11, 2016) at Heritage of Huntington and also from 3 - 7 p.m. Monday (January 11, 2016) at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday (January 11, 2016) at Bailey-Love Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday (January 12, 2016) at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, with Father Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Huntington with military graveside rites performed by VFW Post #2689 of Huntington. Memorial contributions may be made as masses to SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Huntington Catholic School, or Huntington PAL Club, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana. Virgil was born on January 20, 1924 in Huntington, the son of August “Gus” and Hildigard (Schmitt) Scher. He graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1942 and served in the United States Army during WWII as a military police officer. He married Geraldine A. “Geri” Pursifull on August 21, 1948 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Huntington, and she preceded him in death on February 9, 2009. Virgil retired from the Huntington City Police Department after 20 years of service from 1946-1966. During his time on the force, he was Assistant Chief of Police and Chief of Detective Department. He later retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1984 and drove school buses for the Huntington County Community School Corporation. He also sold real estate for many years for Klepper Real Estate and held a commercial pilot license. He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Huntington. He was a Fourth Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He also held memberships with the National Association of Letter Carriers and VFW Post #2689 of Huntington. Survivors include three sons - Ronald E. (Darlene) Scher of Fort Wayne, Raymond A. (Inez) Scher of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Samuel J. (Christine) Scher of Huntington; five daughters - Beverly A. (Thomas Page) Bennett of Brighton, Michigan, Elaine M. (Thomas) Riggs of Plano, Texas, Lynn A. (Brian) Wurm of Monroeville, Indiana, Cynthia A. (Andy) Zay of Huntington, and Lori K. (Gary) Hughes of Brownsburg, Indiana; 24 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother - Gerald P. Scher, a sister - Mildred E. Scher, and a grandson - Nathan Bennett.
