George Edward Runkel

George Edward Runkel, 80, of Huntington, passed away at 8:30 pm Thursday, January 6, 2022, at his home in rural Huntington County surrounded by loved ones. George was born at home in rural Adams County on January 28, 1941, the son of Harold Runkel and Dottie (Morgan) Runkel. He graduated from Hartford Center High School where he lettered in cross country, baseball, and basketball. He married Patricia Jane Murphy on February 22, 1963, in Jay County. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2018. George worked at Active Products for 22 years, where he learned skilled trades in Tool & Die. He finished his work career with General Motors, retiring after 17 years of service. He was a hobby farmer, raising horses, hogs, and 4-H lambs. George was an avid sportsman, hunting whitetails, mule deer and elk. He was also a fisherman who enjoyed fishing out at the farm with his family. He learned the art of flintknapping and enjoyed making arrowheads and knives for family and friends. He was a member of the Banquo Christian Church, the Moose, the Eagles, the Mississinewa 1812, and the Tri State Steam Engine Association. George was a snowbird who enjoyed spending winters in Florida. He also enjoyed metal detecting and won many trophies as a member of PIC. He loved golf cart rides out on the farm with his grandchildren. Survivors include his daughter, Jackie (Mitch) Hobbs of Huntington, IN; son, Patrick (Melanie) Runkel of Bluffton, IN; grandchildren, Kandi (Josh) Hale-Roseberry, Kristie (Eric) McEntyre, Josh Donald, Tom (Makayla Davis) Hobbs, Chayton Foster, Dakota Foster, Levi Runkel, and Jacob Runkel; great grandchildren, Braden McEntyre, Lilly McEntyre, Skylar Donald, Alexis Donald, Dottie Hobbs, Kinlee Hobbs, Rosemary Hobbs, Daphne Hobbs, Xander Davis, Zayn Davis, Leah Hale, Jackson Roseberry, and Conner Roseberry; three sisters, Joann Bolke of Gas City, IN, Gloria Anderson of Roanoke, IN, and Maxine Ferras of Geneva, IN; three brothers, Richard Runkel of Marion, IN, David Runkel of Wabash, IN, and Bobby Runkel of Ft. Wayne, IN; brother-in- law, Randy (Diane) Murphy of Portland, IN; two sister-in- laws, Barb (Jerry) Kipfer of Muncie, IN, and Sue Murphy of Berne, IN. He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jane Runkel, daughter, Kimberly K. Runkel, granddaughter, Samantha Mikeyla Foster, father, Harold E. Runkel, mother, Dottie Runkel, brother, Sonny Runkel, brother, Jim Runkel, sister, Wilma Stevens, sister, Norma Graf, sister, Beulah Murphy, brother-in-law, Wendell Murphy, and brother-in-law, Tom Murphy. A Celebration of life will be held at a later date this summer.
